Muhammadu Buhari was born December 17, 1942 in Daura, Katsina State, Nigeria. He was Nigerian military leader and politician, who served as Head of state in 1984–85. Educated largely in Katsina, Buhari took military training in Kaduna as well as in Great Britain, India, and the United States. He was appointed military governor of North Eastern state (now Borno) in 1975 and was later appointed federal commissioner for petroleum resources by Gen. OlusegunObasanjo, who was the military head of state in 1976. By 1977 he became the military secretary at Supreme Military Headquarters, which was the seat of government. By September 1979 he returned to regular army duties and commanded a division based in Kaduna. His regime launched the “War Against Indiscipline,” a program which sought to promote positive values in Nigerian society. He was the executive chairman of the Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund from its inception in 1994, to its disbandment by the Obasanjo administration in 1999.

He was the military head of state from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985, succeeding Shehu Shagari following the 1983 Nigerian coup d'état.
Buhari ran for president of Nigeria on the platform and support of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2003 and 2007, and on the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) platform in 2011.[2] In December 2014, he emerged as the presidential candidate of[3] the All Progressives Congress party for the 2015 general election.[4] Buhari won the election, defeating incumbent President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.[5] This was the first time in the history of Nigeria that an incumbent president lost a re-election bid. President Buhari was born on 17thDecember, 1942 in Daura, Katsina State to Adamu and Zulaiha Buhari. President Buhari was raised by his mother, following the death of his father when he was about four years old. He had his primary school education in Daura and Maidua from 1948 to 1952, before proceeding to Katsina Middle School in 1953. Subsequently, he attended the Katsina Provincial Secondary School (now Government College, Katsina) from 1956–1961, where he earned his West African School Certificate. President Buhari was married to Safinatu Yusuf from 1971 to 1988, and since 1989 to Aisha Halilu. He is blessed with ten children.
