No matter what style of music surrounds her, Laetitia Sadier exudes effortless cool. Born in France but based in London since co-founding avant-pop group Stereolab with guitarist Tim Gane, Sadier’s socialist political beliefs are as passionate as her vocals are distinctive. Whether singing in French with Britpop band Blur, sharing the mic with Chicago rapper Common, or filtering through Mouse on Mars’s glitching electronics, her airy voice is unmistakable.

Sadier met Gane when his band McCarthy played in Paris in 1988. After contributing vocals to McCarthy’s final album, Banking, Violence And The Inner Life Today, the duo formed Stereolab at the dawn of the ’90s. Joined by motorik-loving drummer Andy Ramsay and the late vocalist Mary Hansen, “The Groop” spent nearly 20 years as a celebrated, subcultural sensation before going on hiatus in 2009.

Laetitia Sadier (b. 1968) is a singer-songwriter who was born in Paris, France. Eager to find like-minded individuals who were passionate about music, she moved to London in 1989. Prior to this, she met Tim Gane at a McCarthy gig in Paris, soon joining the band. They would dissolve and Stereolab would form, becoming the main focus of Sadier’s musical career throughout the 1990s. Sadier was also part of Monade and, more recently, Modern Cosmology. She released her first solo album in 2010, titled The Trip. Her new solo album,Rooting for Love, is out February 23rd via Drag City and is about healing and embracing femininity. Joshua Minsoo Kim talked with Sadier on February 2nd, 2024 via Zoom to discuss her upbringing, the early musical experiences that changed her life, and the importance of healing and being courageous.

Lætitia Sadier (born 6 May 1968), also known as Seaya Sadier, is a French musician best known as a founding member of the London-based avant-pop band Stereolab. She was born in the east of Paris and spent time in the US as a child.^[1] In 1996, while Stereolab was still active, she formed the side project Monade. In 2009 – the same year Stereolab became inactive – she ended the Monade project and began to perform solo work under her own name; her current band is known as the Lætitia Sadier Source Ensemble. She has frequently performed guest vocals and collaborations with other artists.

Sadier was working as a nanny when she met McCarthy guitarist Tim Gane at one of the band's Paris gigs during the late 1980s. She was disillusioned with the rock scene in France, and soon moved to London to be with Gane and to pursue her career.^[2] She contributed vocals to McCarthy's final albums, and when McCarthy broke up in 1990, she and Gane immediately formed Stereolab.
