It took ten years for my art to evolve from painting, to line structure on paper, to installation. In 1983 started to make works in/over water -- large works, using only natural materials that I gathered near by. I would go to natural sites and make art for me, photograph it and tell people about it. In the beginning it was North Carolina, Brooklyn or Long Island. Roy Staab, an artist-in-residence at Lynden this summer, will unveil a new, ephemeral site-specific sculpture in the Little Lake on Sunday, July 15, 2012 as part of Coming (and Going) Attractions. The artist will be on hand to talk about his work throughout the afternoon.
Born in Milwaukee in 1941, Roy Staab received his BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1969 after studying, sometimes at night, at the Layton School and the Milwaukee Institute of Technology. He spent some time in the area as a substitute teacher and art director, and singing opera, before taking off for Europe, where he spent most of the ‘70s, primarily in France—seeing the things he had studied and making work. Roy Frank Staab (born 1941, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States) is an American artist.
Early life
Staab was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States on September 9, 1941,[1] the son of Roy William Staab, an artist, painter, and advertising designer. Staab studied painting and graphics at the Layton School of Art and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. In the 1970s, he lived in Paris and Germany and traveled throughout Europe.
