Former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, head of the Vietnamese government in a nine-year period ending 2006, passed away at his home on early Friday, aged 85.

The former Politburo member and premier died in Ho Chi Minh City’s outer district of Cu Chi at 1:30 am, the Vietnam News Agency reported, citing the board of health care services for senior officials.

Phan Van Khai, born on December 25, 1933 in Cu Chi, was one of the high-ranking Party and state leaders in the first phase of the country's renewal and nation-building cause.

PM Khai was therefore active and determined to build the institution under the spirit of renewal to utilize the capacity of all economic sectors, especially the private one, together with opening door to the world and integrating internationally, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

Phan Văn Khải (born December 25, 1933 in Cu Chi, Saigon) is the Prime Minister of Vietnam since September 241997, and was re-elected in August2002.

Prime Minister Phan Van Khai was born on December 25, 1933 in Tan Thong Hoi village in Cu Chi district, now a suburban ward of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).

He began his activist career at a very early age, when he was admitted to the village's chapter of the Vietnam revolutionary children's movement at the age of 14. Just before he turned 21, Mr. Khai was among the anti-colonial resistance fighters and revolutionary sympathisers from the southern battlefields who regrouped to northern Vietnam under the Geneva Agreement on Indochina signed in July 1954.

Shortly after his arrival in the North in October of 1954, Mr. Khai took part in a land reform drive launched in northern Vietnam to reallocate land from landlords to the landless peasants.

Hanoi (VNA) - Former Politburo member and former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai passed away at 1:30 on March 17 at Cu Chi, Ho Chi Minh City, aged 85, according to the Board of health care services for senior officials. The following is biography of the late PM.

Phan Van Khai was bornon December 25, 1933 in Cu Chi, Ho Chi Minh City. He became a member of theCommunist Party of Vietnam on July 15, 1959.

He studied foreign languages and economics in Moscow, formerSoviet Union (Russia now) from 1959-1965, then worked in the General AffairsDepartment of the State Planning Committee from 1965 to 1971 with the highestposition as head of the office.

From 1972-1975, he was a researcher of the southern economy.In the period, he was sent to the southern battlefield and then served asdeputy head of the Government Unification Committee.
