Even though the Texas Hill Country is full of historic examples of literal architecture, in our title we’re applying a more general definition to the term. Though his may not be an instantly-recognized name (beyond having Castroville named after him), Henri Castro was a Hill Country architect; he was instrumental in introducing European immigrants to the region, indirectly establishing much of its heritage.

The Republic of Texas was established in 1836, with the illustrious Sam Houston as its President, and would exist until Texas’ statehood in 1845. In theory, the republic was all well and good, but Houston knew in practice it wouldn’t flourish without people, preferably those who weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. The blueprint for this plan had been drawn by Stephen F. Austin, who brought immigrants to an area from the Gulf of Mexico to present-day Dallas in the 1820s.

Henri Castro (sometimes called Compte Henri De Castro de Boxar) was living in Paris, France at the time he arranged in 1842 to secure a land grant from Republic of Texas president Sam Houston. His first grant proposal was to bring 200 families to Texas the following year. He was not able to fulfill this agreement. A second effort was more successful. Castro’s ambitious agreement was to bring 600 families from Alsace in France to settle in Texas.

According to genealogy records, Castro was born in Bayonne, France in July, 1786 to a family that was of Portuguese heritage and the Jewish faith. His ancestors are believed to have fled to Southwest France from Portugal during the Spanish Inquisition. Generally, the Spanish Inquisition is described as a movement by Catholic monarchs in Spain and her colonies to promote orthodox religious beliefs. It went on for over three centuries and resulted in some executions, some expulsions, and other related events. His family was considered to be wealthy. Henri Castro (born Moïse Henriques de Castro,^[1] July 17, 1786 – November 3, 1865), was a French diplomat who was one of the most important empresarios of the Republic of Texas.

Early life

Castro, who was born in Bayonne, France, was a Frenchdiplomat of Portuguese-Jewish descent. He later immigrated to the United States and became an American citizen in 1827. In 1838, he worked as a banker in France and sought to secure a loan for the young Republic of Texas. He was then appointed as consul general for Texas by President Sam Houston. He recruited hundreds of families for emigration to Texas. Most came primarily from the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace in eastern France. They traveled to Texas from 1843 to 1847 and settled in the Medina River valley, just west of San Antonio. The city of Castroville on the Medina River is named for him, as is Castro County in the Texas Panhandle. Castro himself settled for a time in Castroville.
