Nguyễn Văn Trỗi was a Việt Minh bomber.
Career
He gained notoriety after being captured by the South Vietnamese while trying to assassinate United States Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara and future ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Junior. who were visiting South Vietnam in May 1963. Sentenced to death, Van Trỗi got a brief reprieve after the FALN, a Venezuelan communist guerrilla group, kidnapped United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Michael Smolen in revenge for Van Troi"s sentence. The group threatened to kill the American if Trỗi was executed.
Smolen was eventually released unharmed, and Trỗi was shot by firing squad shortly thereafter in Chí Hòa Prison.

Meeting the man who played Nguyen Van Troi - Robert McNamara’s would be assassin
Nguyen Van Troi is one of the most celebrated figures in communist Vietnam’s war against the US-backed South Vietnamese government. He was executed in 1964 after unsuccessfully plotting to kill US Defence Secretary Robert McNamara during his 1963 visit to Saigon.
During my recent visit to Hanoi, I met with the man who played Nguyen Van Troi in the famous play that was written in wartime. The meeting was completely unplanned. I was taking a shot of a Hanoi street corner and we began chatting.
Meeting Mr Binh was was another wonderful street-side encounter. Meet Mr Binh in the video below.
I often sit down for a chat with locals - especially the elderly. And especially in Hanoi. Mr Binh was a charmer from the outset and after we spent some time chatting, he told me he’d been an actor and a singer. I asked him whether he’d achieved any fame during his career and he told me he had achieved modest fame playing Nguyen Van Troi on the stage.

Nguyễn Văn Trỗi (1 February 1940[1] – 15 October 1964) was a Vietnamese revolutionary and member of the NLF (National Liberation Front). He gained notoriety after being captured by ARVN forces while trying to assassinate United States Secretary of DefenseRobert McNamara and Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. who were visiting South Vietnam in May 1964.[2]
Sentence and execution
In May 1964, the NLF forces planned to assassinate McNamara and Lodge by blowing up the Công Lý Bridge (10°47′28″N106°40′55″E / 10.791°N 106.682°E / 10.791; 106.682) as their motorcade passed over the bridge. Trỗi was captured by South Vietnamese forces.[3]: 365
