William Howard Doane (February 3, 1832 – December 24, 1915) was a manufacturer, inventor, hymn writer, choral director, church leader and philanthropist. He composed over 2,000 church hymns. "Thomas Doane was born at Chatham, Mass., March 17, 1737 and died at Barrington, Nova Scotia, May 3, 1783 (gravestone, old burial-ground, Barrington Head). He married first, at Chatham, Oct. 4, 1759, Lettice Eldridge, who died at Barrington, July 26, 1766, aged 30 years (gravestone, old burial-ground, Barrington Head).
