Breathing LightThe World of Tokihiro Sato

In our first encounter with the photographs of Tokihiro Sato, we find a very poetic, lyrical world. Strange particles of light dispersed throughout the landscapes, cityscapes and deserted houses. Objects bathed and rimmed with light like illuminations. Perfectly still and deep, they present a single scene of light that seems to breathe.

Describing what Tokihiro Sato does as photography would be unjust, or rather incorrect. It is more accurately defined as a practice between photography and performance. The points of light that inhabit his images are the result of the artist moving and entering his own frame. This creates a poetic and philosophical play, an exploration of our relationship with movement, our presence.
Tokihiro Sato trained in sculpture, but after an initial experiment with points of light based around his work, he redirected his practice towards photography. This shift enabled the artist, born in Sakata in 1957, to create an unusual universe, for which he was awarded the Higashikawa New Photographer Prize in 1990.

Biography
Tokihiro Sato was born on September 14, 1957, in Sakata, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Receiving his MFA and BFA degrees in Music and Fine Arts from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1981, Sato was originally a trained sculptor, but decided to go with photography to better communicate his ideas.
Recognised for his playful interaction of light, Sato uses a large-format camera for exposures that last from one to three hours, while he moves around the space creating illuminated lines drawn with flashlights. The results are detailed photographs interrupted by patterns of light.^[1] And because of the long exposures, Sato’s movements across the scene remain undetectable by the camera; the photograph captures his presence but not his image.
