Indian diplomat (born 1949)
Shivshankar Menon (born 5 July 1949) is an Indian diplomat, who served as National Security Adviser of India under Prime Minister of IndiaManmohan Singh. He had previously served as the Foreign Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs. Prior to that he was Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan, and Sri Lanka and ambassador to China and Israel.[3][4][5] He is currently Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for Social and Economic Progress. He is also Visiting Professor of International Relations at Ashoka University.[6]
Early life and education
Shivshankar Menon hails from Ottapalam in the Palakkad district of Kerala. He comes from a family of diplomats; his father, Parappil Narayana Menon, served as the ambassador to Yugoslavia in his last days. His grandfather K. P. S. Menon (senior) was India's first Foreign Secretary, while his uncle K. P. S. Menon (junior) was the former Indian ambassador to China and the 15th Foreign Secretary.[4] His great-grandfather, Sir C. Former National Security Adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Shoshana Menon previously served as the Foreign Secretary, the top diplomat in India. Prior to that he was Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan and Sri Lanka and Ambassador to China and Israel.
Menon is currently the Chairman, Advisory Board, of Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi and a Distinguished Fellow of the Brookings Institution, Washington DC.
Menon was National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister of India from January 2011 to May 2014 and Foreign Secretary of India from October 2006 to August 2009.
In 2010 Menon was picked by Foreign Policy magazine as one of the world’s “Main 100 Global Thinkers“. He has been a Richard Wilhelm Fellow at Harvard and in 2015 a Fisher Family Fellow at MIT.
Shivshankar Menon is part of the Board of Trustees of the International Crisis Group and a Distinguished Fellow of the Asia Society Policy Institute in New York.
