Dame Judi Dench is a true British national institution, and one of the most celebrated actors of all time.

One of the most celebrated actresses of her generation, British national treasure Judi Dench spent the first half of her career treading the boards with various prestigious theatre companies before venturing into Hollywood with award-winning roles in "Mrs Brown" (1997), "Shakespeare in Love" (1998) and "Iris" (2001). Born in the English county of Yorkshire in 1934, Judi Dench studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama and landed her first professional gig in 1957 playing Ophelia in an Old Vic production of "Hamlet." Dench spent the next four years further honing her craft with the company before moving on to the Playhouse theatres in Nottingham and Oxford and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Dench established herself as a Shakespearean great during her decade-spanning stint with the latter, but still found the time to simultaneously pursue a screen career, too. Judi Dench has appeared in James Bond movies since 1995 as the character M. She has also appeared in other large budget movies such as Mrs. Henderson Presents and Ladies in Lavender.

Dench was born in Heworth, York, England. She is the daughter of Eleanora Olave (née Jones), a native of Dublin, and Reginald Arthur Dench, a doctor.[2] Dench attended the Mount School, a Quaker independent secondary school in York. She became a Quaker.[3][4]

In 1971, Dench married British actor Michael Williams. Their only child is Tara Cressida Frances Williams. She was born on 24 September 1972. She is known professionally as Finty Williams. Dench and her husband starred together several times. Michael Williams died from lung cancer in 2001, aged 65.

In early 2012, Dench said she had macular degeneration. Because of this, she needed someone to read scripts to her.
