Biography

James Grashow (b.1942) is an American artist who established himself as an illustrator early in his career, doing woodcuts and engravings for album covers and major publications. He is best known, however, for his creative genius working with cardboard. Grashow’s cardboard creations include large-scale installations such as fountains and menageries; smaller, elaborate cities and buildings amid flowers and leaves (Houseplants); and exquisitely detailed birds (Cardbirds). His works, addressing “themes of man, nature and mortality,” have been exhibited, both indoors and outdoors, all over the country since the 1960s; and he is continually seeking new outlets for his creative energy.[1]

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Grashow earned his BFA from Pratt Institute. After graduation, he spent a year in Florence, Italy on a Fulbright Travel Grant for painting and graphics. Upon returning to the United States he continued his studies at Pratt and was awarded an MFA in 1965. Grashow made a name for himself in woodcuts and engravings for album covers

James Grashow was born in Brooklyn in 1942 and has been creating works that address themes of man, nature and mortality since the 1960's.

The scale of his work ranges from large environmental installations, through which the viewer traverses, to the delicate and contained world of his houseplants, where homes and buildings replace flowers and buds in intricately constructed bouquets.

James Grashow is also a well-known woodcut artist. His prints have appeared regularly in the New York Times and in virtually every well known periodical and publication through out the country.

James Grashow attended Pratt Institute where he received a BFA. On graduation, he was awarded a Fulbright Travel Grant for painting and graphics to Florence, Italy. After a year abroad, he returned to Pratt to receive his MFA.

James Grashow had his first sculpture show at the Allan Stone Gallery in 1966, a relationship which continued for over 50 years.

WCSU Visual and Performing Arts Center to host inaugural exhibition, ‘Corrugated Worlds: The Work of James Grashow’

DANBURY, CONN. — The Western Connecticut State UniversityDepartment of Art will present “Corrugated Worlds: The Work of James Grashow” as the inaugural exhibition in the Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC) on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. An Exhibition Opening and Gallery Gala Reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, noon to 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m. Grashow’s work will be on display through Sunday, Dec. 7. Please note that the gallery will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday from Wednesday, Nov. 26, through Sunday, Nov. 30.

The exhibition will include a unique arrangement of cardboard flowers, animals and people in the VPAC Art Gallery. Dancing couples tower alongside cascading walls of monkeys, while graceful birds are perched in bouquets of precisely detailed
