Biography

Michael J. Murray is an Associate Professor at Bemidji State University and Research Scholar at the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity. He co-edits the American Review of Political Economy and the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity book series. Murray’s research focuses on public policies targeting full employment, production theory, structural and technological change, and its impacts on employment.

Murray teaches classes in Macroeconomics, Labor Economics, Financial Economics, Banking, Public Policy, Statistics, and Geographical Information Systems. Murray is active in both teaching and research. He is editor of the American Review of Political Economy, an interdisciplinary open access scholarly journal of Heterodox Economics and is one of three editors for Palgrave Macmillan’s Global Institute for Sustainab

Biography

Michael Murray has been described as "a contemporary craftsman-artist of original stripe" whose music is "easy to listen to in the best possible way." His compositions cover a wide variety of styles and media, but his gift for lyricism is particularly well suited to acoustic music featuring the human voice. In addition to works for the concert hall, he has written music for film, theater productions, dance, and visual arts installations. His music is featured on the Navona and Ansonica record labels, and is published by Ars Nova Press.

Murray is a Hambidge Fellow and has also been artist in residence at Osage Arts Community. He has won awards and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, Pi Kappa Lambda, and the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs. Among his commissions are those from American Wild Ensemble, the Missouri Chamber Players, and the music fraternities of Missouri State University. Integrative Medicine: A Clinician’s Journal (IMCJ): What originally led you into health care?

Dr Murray: I have 2 stories, an external story that I freely share and then more of a private, personal story. The external story is that I suffered a knee injury when I was 14 years old. This injury continued to worsen over the next 4 years. Finally, when I was 18, I could barely walk, and I was in a lot of pain. I had exploratory surgery because they didn’t know what was wrong with it. When they got in there, they saw that the patellar tendon was almost completely ruptured, so they reattached the tendon as best they could with wire. They told me if I could walk without a noticeable limp and if I could play some golf, then they would consider the surgery a success. Well, a year and a half after the surgery, I could walk without a noticeable limp, but I still couldn’t put any real weight on the leg, so running, playing basketball, and doing all the things that I really enjoyed physically were limited.
