Presidential elections were held in the United States on November 5, 2024.[a] The Republican Party's ticket—Donald Trump, who was the 45th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021, and JD Vance, the junior U.S. senator from Ohio—defeated the Democratic Party's ticket—Kamala Harris, the incumbent vice president, and Tim Walz, the 41st governor of Minnesota.[6][7]

The incumbent president, Joe Biden of the Democratic Party, initially ran for re-election as the party's presumptive nominee,[8] facing little opposition and easily defeating Representative Dean Phillips during the Democratic primaries;[9] however, what was broadly considered a poor debate performance in June 2024 intensified concerns about his age and health, and led to calls within his party for him to leave the race.[10] After initially declining to do so, Biden withdrew on July 21, becoming the first eligible incumbent president to withdraw since Lyndon B

About the Republican VP Candidate

Vance has risen quickly to become Trump’s vice presidential nominee, and he would be the third-youngest vice president in history if their ticket wins this fall. He was raised in Kentucky and Ohio and wrote about his mother’s battle with drug addiction, a rotating cast of father figures and the other socioeconomic challenges his family faced in “Hillbilly Elegy,” a bestselling memoir that first earned him broad notice in 2016. Vance served in the Marines after high school, including in Iraq, and later graduated from Ohio State University and earned a law degree from Yale University, where he met his wife, Usha. Vance worked in venture capital before he moved back to his home state to start his own firm and eventually run for office in 2022, winning an open Ohio Senate seat after reversing his previous criticism of Donald Trump and earning his endorsement in a crowded primary.

On July 21, 2024, incumbent President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee after his victories in the primaries, withdrew as a candidate.[6] Vice President Kamala Harris announced her candidacy the same day[7] and officially became
