David Keith Lynch (January 20, 1946 – January 16, 2025) was an American filmmaker, visual artist, musician, and actor. Widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time,[a] Lynch was often called a "visionary" and was acclaimed for films often distinguished by their surrealist and experimental qualities. In a career spanning more than five decades, he received numerous accolades, including the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival in 2006 and an Honorary Academy Award in 2019.
Lynch studied painting and made short films before making his first feature, the independent body horror film Eraserhead (1977), which found success as a midnight movie. Lynch’s parents Edwina Lynch, née Sundholm, and Donald Walton Lynch met and fell in love with each other while studying at Duke University in North Carolina. The father, who grew up on a farm in the northwestern United States, worked as an agricultural scientist for the US Department of Agriculture. Being a native of Brooklyn, the mother at first gave language lessons and later on devoted herself entirely to family life.

David Keith Lynch (January 20, 1946 – January 15, 2025)[1] was an American filmmaker, painter, television director, visual artist, musician and occasional actor. Known for his surrealist films, he developed his own unique cinematic style, most often noted for its dreamlike imagery and meticulous sound design. The surreal and, in many cases, violent elements in his films earned them a reputation as works that "disturb, offend or mystify" general audiences.
Although born in Missoula, Montana, Lynch spent his youth traveling across the United States due to his father Donald's job for the Department of Agriculture; as a result, Lynch attended school across several states. Raised in a contented, happy family, the young Lynch was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, reaching the highest rank of Eagle Scout. However, Lynch took to building fireworks and playing the bongos in a Beat Generation nightclub as acts of rebellion, before discovering that he could translate his childhood fascination with drawing and pain
