James Tillotson Whitehead: A Biography

James Tillotson Whitehead was born on March 15, 1936, in St. Louis, Missouri. His parents are Dick Bruun Whitehead and Ruth Ann Tillotson. His family moved to Jackson, Mississippiafter World War II , where he attended Liberty Grove Elementary School and Bailey Junior High School. He graduated from Central High School in Jackson, where he played football. He received a four-year football scholarship to Vanderbilt University where he earned both a B. A. and a M.A. degree.

Known to his friends as “Big Jim” because of his height of six foot six inches, Whitehead considered becoming a professional football player, but a football injury at Vanderbilt ended that dream. Whitehead then decided to become a Presbyterian minister, so he majored in philosophy. James Tillotson Whitehead (March 15, 1936 St. Louis, Missouri - August 16, 2003 Fayetteville, Arkansas) was an American poet and novelist. He published four books of poetry and one novel, Joiner.

Biography

James Whitehead was born in St. Louis in 1936. He grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, where his family moved after World War II. Standing six foot 5 inches, and known as "Big Jim" he received a football scholarship at Vanderbilt University. However, a serious injury there dashed any hopes he had of a professional career. Instead, he focused on his studies, earning a bachelor's degree in philosophy, then staying for a master's degree in English. He then went to the University of Iowa where he acquired an M.F.A. in creative writing.

Whitehead then joined his college friend William Harrison in founding the creative writing program at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. They were soon joined by poet Miller Williams, and the three men continued to build what would become one the nations most distinguished wri

James S. Whitehead practiced employment and labor law with the Chicago office of Sidley Austin LLP for 42 years. He joined Sidley after clerking for the Honorable John Paul Stevens on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He received his BA degree from Yale University (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and his JD from the Law School (cum laude, Order of the Coif).

Mr. Whitehead has had extensive experience in employment litigation in federal and state courts and before administrative agencies, including in cases involving discrimination, harassment, wage-hour, and other federal and state statutory and common law claims. He represented the nation's railroads in employment and labor relations cases arising under the Railway Labor Act and other transportation statutes. He also has handled over 60 employment and labor cases at the appellate level, including cases in the United States Supreme Court, and nine of the federal circuit courts of appeals.
