Frank Adamo, age 80, passed away Monday, May 9, 2022 in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. He was born July 8, 1941 to Lucia and Joseph Adamo in Brooklyn, New York. He married the love of his life, Joyce Ferdinandus, April 19, 1974 in Queens, New York. They were blessed to have been married 48 years at the time of his passing. Frank proudly served as a New York City Police Officer for 15 years. He loved the community and was honored to serve them. He was also an accomplished radio D.J. and known as the Godfather of DooWop. He was a produced playwright and a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Rio Rancho.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucia and Joseph Adamo.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Joyce Adamo; two children; three brothers, Joseph, Richard and Ernest.

Tuesday's Overlooked TV: Character Actor Frank Adamo

From time to time I'm going to spotlight some of the actors whose faces you might (or might not) recognize, but whose names you probably won't. It's a stretch even to call this first guy a character actor. He's a bit part actor, but he's notable, to me anyway, because he appeared dozens of times on one of the best sit-coms ever, THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW. His name is Frank Adamo.

If you watch the series, you'll see that name in the closing credits from time to time, but that's hardly the whole story. Adamo wasn't a professional actor, or at least he didn't start out to be. He was Dick Van Dyke's assistant and stand-in, and when they needed an extra party guest or a guy standing in the background in a nightclub or somebody waiting in line somewhere, Adamo would step in. Most of those appearances were uncredited. Every now and then he got a small speaking part. He played a lot of waiters and delivery boys and ushers. Frank Adamo (1893–1988) was an American doctor honored for his medical service during World War II. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel and was awarded a Legion of Merit medal for his service.

Adamo was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. As a pre-teen, he went to work rolling cigars. After the cigar strike of 1910, he moved to Chicago and resumed his schooling, eventually enrolling at the Chicago College of Medicine and Surgery. He returned to Tampa in 1919 for his internship and joined the Army Reserve in 1923.

Adamo went on active duty in 1940 and served in the Philippines as a surgeon. After the Japanese attack on Bataan, Adamo went to Corregidor, where he treated many casualties. Many patients suffered from gangrene. Amputation was the accepted treatment, but Adamo knew that the gangrene bacillus could not survive if exposed to oxygen, so he tried opening the wounds and applying sulfa drugs, irrigating hourly with hydrogen peroxide. The innovative treatment was effective, and Adamo was credited with saving many lives and
