Helen Virginia Griffith, age 89, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away on October 5, 2024 at her nephew’s home in Cochranville, PA surrounded by family. Born in Wilmington, DE she was the daughter of the late John Griffith and the late Helen V. Griffith.
Helen graduated from Conrad High School in 1952. After highschool, Helen worked various secretarial jobs in the Wilmington area until joining the family business, S G Williams & Bros. Co., where she worked as the corporate secretary until her retirement in 1999. After many years of night classes, Helen graduated from the University of Delaware with a bachelor’s degree in English in 2000.
Helen was caring, friendly, and generous. Helen did not have children of her own, but she treated her nieces and nephews as such. When her father died in 1980, she moved in with her mother and cared for her until her death in 1995. Helen was friendly with all. She had many lifelong friends and many that were picked up along the way. Helen generously donated James Stevenson was born in Manhattan, New York on July 11, 1929. He graduated from Yale University. He was a reporter from Life magazine before being hired by The New Yorker in 1956. He drew 1,988 cartoons, 79 covers, and wrote and illustrated articles including Talk of the Town pieces for the magazine. He also drew editorial cartoons for The New York Times and in 2004 began an occasional series for the Op-Ed page entitled Lost and Found New York, which looked back on people and places of the past. He wrote and/or illustrated more than 100 children's books including Don't You Know There's a War On, The Worst Person in the World, Higher on the Door, The Mud Flat Olympics, Yard Sale, The Mud Flat Mystery, What's Under My Bed, That Terrible Halloween Night, and Worse Than Willy. In 1987, he won the Caldecott Honor for When I Was Nine. He also wrote novels and an illustrated biography of Frank Modell, a fellow New Yorker cartoonist. He died of pneumonia on February 17, 2017 at the age of 87. Helen Virginia Griffith, age 89, of Wilmington, passed away October 5, 2024. Born in Wilmington, she was the daughter of late John Griffith and late Helen V. Griffith. Survived by one brother, John D. Griffith (Julia Hope Yarbrough) of West Grove; two nephews, John D. Griffith, Jr. (Michelle S. Griffith) of Cochranville and Joseph Griffith Yarbrough of West Grove; two nieces, Natalie Griffith of Newport, and Mary Griffith of Salt Lake City, UT and many grandnieces and grandnephews and their families. Predeceased by a brother, David H. Griffith; a nephew, David C. Griffith; and her longtime companion, Jack Worrell. Viewing will be 10:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 14, 2024 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2313 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803.
