William J. Cameron

Writer for Henry Ford's Dearborn Independent

William John ("Billy") Cameron (1878–1955) was a newspaper editor most well known for his work at The Dearborn Independent, where he was responsible for publishing a series of anti-Semitic articles known as "The International Jew". He also was influential in the British Israel movement, helping Howard Rand launch the Anglo-Saxon Federation of America.

Early life

William J. Cameron was born in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1878. His family moved to Michigan for a brief time, but he returned to Canada for high school, and then some courses at the University of Toronto.[1][2]: 73  In 1904, Cameron began working as a staff reporter at the Detroit News, eventually moving up to become chief editorial writer where he wrote an editorial column called Reflections.[2]: 262

After being recommended by E.G. Pipp, whom Cameron had worked for at the Detroit News, Henry Ford hired him to work for The Dearborn Independent,

    W. J. CAMERON, of the firm of McCune & Cameron, hardware merchants, of Belle Plaine, was born in Belmont County, Ohio, Aug. 26, 1854, and is a son of Joseph and Susanna (Talbot) Cameron, the former of whom was born in Scotland, and the latter in Ohio; she was of English descent.

    W. J. Cameron came to Iowa in 1862, at the age of eight years, and received his education in the public schools of De Witt, Clinton County, graduating from the High School of that city. He learned the tinner's trade at the latter-named city, and in 1880 removed to Gladbrook, in the same State, where he engaged in the hardware business, which he continued for one year, and then sold out, engaging in the same line at De Witt, where he remained until October, 1884. He then sold out his stock and located at Belle Plaine, where he opened his present hardware store. He continued business alone until Jan. 18, 1886, when he formed the existing partnership with F. L.
