Ichalkaranji (pronunciationⓘ[it͡səlkəɾəɳd͡ʒiː]) is a city in Kolhapur District, Maharashtra. It is situated at the bank of the Panchganga River. Its textile industry has led to the nickname 'Manchester City of Maharashtra'.
History
Ichalkaranji was a Marathajagir situated on the banks of the Panchganga River (Marathi: पंचगंगा नदी). It was ruled by the Babasaheb Ghorpade family for nearly two centuries until 1947. The dynasty of the Maratha rulers of Ichalkaranji has its origins in the middle of the seventeenth century. At that time, a poor Brahmin widow of the Joshi family, hailing from the coastal Konkan village of Mhapan near Vengurla, in the present-day Sindhudurg district, moved east over the mountainous Western Ghats with her seven-year-old son, Naro Mahadeo, to the village of Kapshi. The Maratha general Santaji Ghorpade, hailed from that village. From running around prepping for my Mid-session review and getting each submission rejected to celebrating Full on Onam with people I can call family.
