Charles Bragg was one-in-a-million. I’ve never known anyone like him, nor is it likely that I ever will again.

He was an amalgam of many parts: a supremely gifted visual artist, a storyteller and a witty writer, a deeply educated classicist, a keen observer of human nature and a comic. All of these qualities came together in a man of uncommon warmth, uncompromising dedication to his craft and a determination to keep on moving and growing as an artist and a man. He worked every day — up to his very last.

Charles pushed away compliments and became uncomfortable when I spoke publicly about his importance as an artist of our time. But this remains true. His work resides within a long narrative tradition that begins with Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel, and extends through Francisco Goya, William Hogarth, Honoré Daumier, into Al Hirschfeld and Ralph Steadman. Each of these artists in his own way cast an eye on the society of their times — the institutions, the culture, the behaviors of the classes, religion, work, life, death, ambiguity and irony. I

The art of Charles Lynn Bragg has been seen by millions of people. You might have seen his environmental images in art galleries, on magazine covers, jigsaw puzzles or postage stamps.

Charles Lynn Bragg was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1952. His artist parents, Charles Bragg and Jennie Tomao moved young Charles (Chick) and younger sister Georgia to Los Angeles in 1956 to establish a professional art studio in Beverly Hills. As teenagers, his parents took the family to galleries and museums in Los Angeles, New York and Europe. Art and Art History unfolded naturally and on purpose for Chick. His higher education and formal training began at L.A City College, followed by Pierce Jr College, UCLA Extension, The California Institute of the Arts, Otis Art Institute Extension, California State University Fullerton and El Camino College.

Bragg's concerns start with the narrative, even anecdotal, and he has created a cast of characters who have lost their souls while acting out depravities through tragicomic burlesques of morality and ethics. Like a visual re-enactment of Gertrude Stein's wonderful tale, "I Know I'm a Queen Because I Wear a Crown," his half-ass generals embody their values in symbols of their acquisitiveness and vanity such as phony and ornate medallions.
Bragg's sinful universe is home to inept warmarkers frozen (clinically but not without humanity) as they plot, plan, scheme, pose, and rattle phallic sabres; they fumble and bristle beneath Prussian sashes and Edwardian haircuts while breathing heavily through forced smiles (psychosomatic asthma?).
Bragg's bittersweet people are pompous, voiceless, pious and cruel! They are completely believable, even lovable; yet they are der
